Gap of Dunloe, Killarney – A Must‑See with a Local Guide
One of Ireland’s Most Beautiful Mountain Passes
The Gap of Dunloe is, in my opinion, one of the most breathtaking places in Ireland — and I don’t say that lightly after more than 40 years guiding visitors through the landscapes of Kerry. While the Gap is not technically within Killarney National Park, it lies immediately adjacent to it and is absolutely a must‑see when visiting Killarney.
This narrow mountain pass winds its way between the MacGillycuddy Reeks and the Purple Mountain, following an ancient route shaped by glaciers during the last Ice Age. The result is a dramatic, wild, and deeply peaceful landscape that feels untouched by time.

My Local Advice: Timing Is Everything
One thing I always explain to my guests is that how and when you visit the Gap of Dunloe matters enormously.
The road through the Gap is extremely narrow and not suitable for cars between approximately 9:00 am and 6:00 pm. During these hours, traditional jaunting cars — horse‑drawn carriages — travel through the Gap carrying visitors. This is their livelihood, and it’s a tradition that has been part of Killarney life for generations.
Because of this, my rule of thumb is simple:
I will only drive the Gap early in the morning, no later than 8:30 am
After that time, the experience becomes stressful for drivers and disruptive for the jaunting cars

The Best Ways to Experience the Gap of Dunloe
1. By Jaunting Car (My Top Recommendation)
If you want to enjoy the scenery stress‑free, I strongly recommend parking your car at Kate Kearney’s Cottage and taking a jaunting car through the Gap. This allows you to:
Relax and take in the views
Support a local tradition
Avoid traffic and tight passing points
Kate Kearney’s Cottage also has a pub and restaurant, making it a lovely place to begin or end your visit.
2. On Foot – A Hiker’s Paradise
For those who enjoy walking, the Gap of Dunloe is one of the most rewarding hiking routes in Kerry. The trail takes you past lakes, rivers, and sheer mountain faces, with ever‑changing light and scenery.
Walking allows you to notice the smaller details — the sounds of water, the wildlife, and the stillness that makes this place so special.
3. The Classic Gap of Dunloe Full‑Day Tour
One of the most popular ways to experience the Gap is as part of a full‑day tour:
Start at Kate Kearney’s Cottage
Travel through the Gap by jaunting car or on foot
Finish at Brandon’s Cottage, at the end of the trail
Board a boat that travels through the Lakes of Killarney
Arrive at Ross Castle, one of Killarney’s most iconic landmarks
It’s a magical combination of mountains, lakes, and history — and for many visitors, it becomes the highlight of their entire trip to Ireland.
